Wedding DJ at Hockwold Hall Norfolk

Some venues make you feel like you’re attending an event. Others make you feel like you’ve arrived somewhere.

Hockwold Hall is firmly in the second category. A 16th-century Grade II listed Tudor Hall — a former royal residence, no less — set within 50 acres of beautifully maintained grounds on the Norfolk and Suffolk border. The kind of place that has genuine history in its walls and genuine warmth in the way it looks after couples on their wedding day.

It’s also the 2025 East of England Venue of the Year. Which tells you something about how seriously they take what they do.

What Makes Hockwold Hall Special

The scale, first of all. Fifty acres of grounds gives photographers almost unlimited options and gives guests the sense of space that a smaller venue simply can’t offer. Whether you’re planning an outdoor ceremony in the licensed ceremony space, an indoor ceremony in one of the two stunning indoor locations, or the full day from bridal prep to carriages, the estate can accommodate it beautifully.

The grand marquee seats up to 280 guests — making Hockwold one of the larger capacity venues in the region — but it never feels impersonal. The team there — Richard, Anna, Ally, Beth and Molly — bring a genuinely personal approach to every wedding, with dedicated on-the-day coordinators ensuring everything runs smoothly from start to finish.

The accommodation is another standout. With nine en-suite bedrooms in the Hall itself, the Hockwold Inn, St Peter’s Cottage, The Old Coach House and off-site options, guests don’t need to worry about getting home. That changes the energy of an evening considerably — when nobody is watching the clock for taxis, the dancefloor stays full considerably longer.

The Dancefloor at Hockwold Hall

Hockwold Hall has an in-house sound system and a light-up dancefloor in the marquee — which is worth knowing about when you’re thinking about your evening entertainment. A light-up floor changes the visual energy of a room dramatically, and when the lighting is right and the music is right, the marquee at Hockwold can feel genuinely spectacular.

That said, my job is always to work with the space rather than against it. I’ll arrive early, liaise with the team about sound levels, check how the room is set up, and make sure everything is running properly before a single guest walks in. No surprises on the night, for anyone.

Playing at a Larger Venue

A capacity of up to 280 guests is a different proposition to an intimate barn wedding for 60. Larger rooms need careful sound management — getting the levels right across the whole space rather than just near the speakers. The transition from wedding breakfast to evening party needs to be handled with more care, because with more guests there are more competing energy levels to read and manage.

After 30 years of playing at venues across Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, I’ve learned that larger rooms reward patience. The dancefloor doesn’t fill all at once — it builds. And when it does build properly, a full dancefloor in a marquee of that size is one of the most impressive things in wedding entertainment.

Planning Your Wedding at Hockwold Hall

If you’re booked at Hockwold Hall and thinking about your evening entertainment, the process is straightforward. My online planning portal lets you map out your entire evening at your own pace — must-plays, do-not-plays, the first dance, key moments, the overall atmosphere you’re going for. Everything in one place, nothing left to chance.

Because I only take one wedding per week, your day gets my complete attention from the first conversation right through to the last song. And because Hockwold sits right on the Norfolk and Suffolk border, it’s well within my patch — I know the area well and I’m not travelling blind to somewhere I’ve never been.
