Wedding DJ at Sheene Mill, Melbourn

Some venues look great in photos but feel slightly flat when you actually arrive. Sheene Mill is the opposite. It’s one of those places that genuinely exceeds expectations in person — and that’s saying something, because the photos are already stunning.

Nestled on the banks of the River Mel in Melbourn, just ten minutes from Cambridge, this Grade II listed 16th century mill has everything a wedding venue should have: real history, beautiful grounds, intimate spaces with character, and a team who clearly love what they do. It’s family-owned and it feels it — in the best possible way.

I’ve had the pleasure of providing DJ and MC entertainment at Sheene Mill a number of times, including full all day packages, and it’s a venue I always look forward to returning to.

A venue with genuine character

The building itself sets the tone the moment you step inside. Original features, exposed beams, open fireplaces, and rooms that each feel distinct — there’s no identikit hotel ballroom feel here. Every space has its own atmosphere, which means couples can shape their day around the rooms rather than the other way around.

Outside, the riverside setting is extraordinary. The outdoor wedding pavilion suspended across the River Mel is one of the most distinctive ceremony settings in the county — the kind of backdrop that photographers love and guests genuinely remember. The landscaped gardens, mill pond views and the venue’s rather famous resident swan Will add to a setting that feels quintessentially and beautifully English.

For larger celebrations, Sheene Mill offers exclusive use of the whole venue for up to 180 evening guests, with ten boutique bedrooms on site so the wedding party doesn’t have to go anywhere at the end of the night. That’s a detail couples often underestimate until they’re dancing at midnight and realise they can just head upstairs.

What is the venue is like for entertainment?

The main function room at Sheene Mill works really well for an evening party. It’s an intimate space — not vast — which actually works in your favour when it comes to the dancefloor. You don’t need to fill a warehouse. The room responds quickly to good energy, and when it gets going, it really gets going.

The shabby chic interior styling also means the space looks brilliant with the right lighting — it’s warm and atmospheric rather than clinical, which makes the whole evening feel special rather than just functional.

One thing worth knowing: the transition from the wedding breakfast to the evening party is one of the moments I pay close attention to at Sheene Mill. Getting that changeover right — the moment the dancefloor opens and the tone shifts — makes a huge difference to how the rest of the evening flows. It’s exactly the kind of thing I love getting right.

What Erin and Dan said

“Wayne was an absolute vibe! We had an amazing experience with Wayne as our wedding DJ. He was incredibly responsive in the lead-up, and his online planning system was honestly a dream to use — really intuitive and even let us pick some truly random remixes. On the night, Wayne absolutely nailed the vibe! He helped us transition from a slow cover into an upbeat version of the same song, and it instantly filled the dancefloor. Guests kept telling us how good he was, and people are still talking about how fun the evening was thanks to him. We couldn’t recommend Wayne more.”

— Erin & Daniel Clarkson — All Day Experience, Sheene Mill

The all day experience at Sheene Mill

Sheene Mill lends itself particularly well to a full day entertainment package. The variety of spaces — ceremony room or outdoor pavilion, drinks reception in the gardens, wedding breakfast, then the evening party — means there are natural moments throughout the day where music can shift the mood and mark each transition.

Having one person handling all of that, who knows the venue and has built a proper understanding of what you want, takes a significant amount of pressure off your day. You’re not co-ordinating between different suppliers or worrying about handovers. Everything flows from one conversation, one planning process, and one person who’s invested in the whole day.

Erin and Dan chose the all day experience, and the planning process they mention — the online system, the conversations beforehand — is something I put real effort into. The work that happens before the wedding is what makes the day itself feel effortless.
