The first dance….what’s YOUR song?

The interim results are in for 2017 (although there’s still a couple of months of weddings to go). The results though are fairly conclusive, especially from my side of the booth.

The number one first dance track for 2017 is no surprise to either myself or my colleagues who perform at wedding receptions most weeks of the year!

It’s a song we’ve heard A LOT!

THE MOST POPULAR FIRST DANCE SONG FOR 2017 IS……..

Ed Sheeran’s Perfect!

To be completely honest, that’s not a big surprise and indeed if myself and my wife were marrying now (as opposed to 18 years ago), we’d probably have chosen this one as well. The words are, well….perfect for a first dance track.

The rest of the Top 10 for the year to date is a bit of a surprise, and to be honest I haven’t played many of them as a first dance. The results at the moment stand as:

  1. Perfect: Ed Sheeran
  2. All Of Me: John Legend
  3. Halo: Beyonce
  4. Make You Feel My Love: Adele
  5. The Very Thought of You: Michael Buble
  6. Thinking Out Loud: Ed Sheeran
  7. You & I (Nobody in the world): John Legend
  8. One And Only: Adele
  9. Satellites: Beyonce
  10. My Baby Just Cares For Me: Michael Buble

Out of those, my couples have chosen only the two Ed Sheeran songs. Thankfully, “All Of Me” by John Legend hasn’t been played at all this year!

So….to my current Top 10 (and I still have half a dozen weddings to go this year, some of which haven’t yet chosen their first dance track)

  1. Perfect: Ed Sheeran (a staggering 11 times this year!)
  2. Thinking Out Loud: Ed Sheeran (played 5 times as a first dance)
  3. Rule The World: Take That (3 times)
  4. Use Somebody:  Kings of Leon (twice)
  5. Chasing Cars: Snow Patrol (twice)
  6. Latch: Sam Smith (twice)
  7. Naive Melody: Taking Heads
  8. I Do: Westlife
  9. When A Man Loves a Woman: Percy Sledge
  10. Chariots Rise: Lizzie West

Other songs have included: True by Spandau Ballet (for a mother and father of the bride), Still the One by Shania Twain, and Mellow Mood by Bob Marley

So as you can hopefully see, although there is one outright “winner” for the first dance song this year to date, the rest of my couples haven’t followed with national trends. Your first dance song should be something memorable and special to you as a couple, and positions 3 – 10 reflect this.

Traditionally, the First Dance song is something memorable such as the first song you ever danced to when you first met, something special which was on the radio when you proposed or were dating….a song which means something to you as a couple.

My own first dance song? That was Shania Twain’s From This Moment On (and it still sends shudders down my spine when I play it during a party….just listen to the words – they’re as true to Liz and myself now as they were then!)

Interestingly, Aerosmith’s Don’t Want To Miss A Thing, Bryan Adams’ Everything I Do and John Legend’s All Of Me have completely disappeared from the radar this year (although they have been played during the evening)

Why are the words to Perfect by Ed Sheeran so good for a first dance though?

Well….read for yourself. They’re just…well, um……Perfect for the special and most romantic occasion of a wedding

I found a love for me
Darling just dive right in
And follow my lead
Well I found a girl beautiful and sweet
I never knew you were the someone waiting for me
‘Cause we were just kids when we fell in love
Not knowing what it was
I will not give you up this time
But darling, just kiss me slow, your heart is all I own
And in your eyes you’re holding mine
Baby, I’m dancing in the dark with you between my arms
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song
When you said you looked a mess, I whispered underneath my breath
But you heard it, darling, you look perfect tonight
Well I found a woman, stronger than anyone I know
She shares my dreams, I hope that someday I’ll share her home
I found a love, to carry more than just my secrets
To carry love, to carry children of our own
We are still kids, but we’re so in love
Fighting against all odds
I know we’ll be alright this time
Darling, just hold my hand
Be my girl, I’ll be your man
I see my future in your eyes
Baby, I’m dancing in the dark, with you between my arms
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song
When I saw you in that dress, looking so beautiful
I don’t deserve this, darling, you look perfect tonight
Baby, I’m dancing in the dark, with you between my arms
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song
I have faith in what I see
Now I know I have met an angel in person
And she looks perfect
I don’t deserve this
You look perfect tonight
