Wedding DJ at The Thatch Barn, Yelling

There are barn venues, and then there’s The Thatch Barn. Set on a working farm in the tiny Cambridgeshire village of Yelling, this 400-year-old Grade II listed building is one of those venues that stops you in your tracks the moment you walk in.

The original oak beams span the full width of the building. The vaulted thatched roof soars above you. The bar is built from timber taken from the original roof during restoration. It’s a venue with genuine history and character — and it wears both beautifully.

I’ve had the pleasure of providing evening DJ services here, and it’s a venue I always enjoy returning to. The rustic atmosphere lends itself perfectly to a great evening party — and when the lighting goes up and the dancefloor fills, it looks and sounds brilliant.

A Venue With Real Soul

What makes The Thatch Barn special isn’t any single feature — it’s the combination of everything working together. The original features give it warmth and authenticity that newer venues simply can’t replicate. The surrounding farm land — wildflower meadows, lavender, crops of wheat and beans — provides some of the best natural photography backdrops in Cambridgeshire. And the decked terrace adjacent to the barn is perfect for guests to spill out onto during the evening.

The venue operates on an exclusive use basis, which makes an enormous difference. You’re not sharing the space with strangers, not competing for the bar, and not being asked to move on because another booking is waiting. The whole farm is yours for the day.

Directly opposite the Holy Cross Church, Yelling, it’s also ideally set up for couples who want a traditional church ceremony followed by a reception at the barn — a short walk between the two, and a complete change of atmosphere that guests always find memorable.

What the Evening Is Like

The barn holds up to 100 guests for the wedding breakfast and 120 for the evening reception — a size that works very well for entertainment. It’s intimate enough that the dancefloor fills quickly and energy builds naturally, but spacious enough that 120 guests can move freely and enjoy the night.

The vaulted roof is one of the acoustic features I appreciate most here. The height gives the sound real room to breathe without becoming echoey, and the warmth of the timber throughout absorbs the kind of harshness you sometimes get in more modern structures. It’s a barn that genuinely sounds as good as it looks.

My white or rustic setup works particularly well at The Thatch Barn — both sit naturally against the original features without competing with them. The rustic setup in particular feels like it was made for a venue like this. Once the evening lighting is up and the dancefloor gets going, the whole space transforms.

One practical note worth knowing: music finishes at 11.30pm and guests vacate by 11.45pm. It’s a tight curfew by some standards, so getting the evening started properly — no slow build, no awkward transitions — is especially important here. That’s exactly the kind of thing I plan for in advance.

What Pete and Terri Said

“Absolutely fantastic DJ — but also, which was so important to us, was the ease and speed of communication. Every email answered same day with real passion and understanding. Wayne does exactly what you want and understands your needs — not the normal cheesy stuff. Great guy. Highly recommend.”

Planning Your Evening at The Thatch Barn

The Thatch Barn handles the afternoon in-house and doesn’t hold a ceremony licence, so couples typically have their ceremony at Holy Cross Church opposite before heading to the barn for the reception. That means by the time I arrive and set up for the evening, the day is already well underway and guests are relaxed and ready to celebrate.

Before your wedding, we’ll have a proper conversation about your crowd, your music tastes and the moments that matter most. My online planning portal lets you map everything out at your own pace — must-plays, do-not-plays, the first dance, the last song — all in one place without chasing emails back and forth.

On the night, I arrive early, set up discreetly, and get on with the job — reading the room, keeping the energy where it needs to be, and making sure the evening flows without you ever having to think about it.
