Why use your DJ as your Wedding MC?

If you’re planning your big day, one thing you might be wondering is, “What’s the deal with DJs acting as wedding MCs?”

Well, let me tell you, dear reader, the role of a DJ as your wedding MC is actually super important! Sure, they’re there to spin some tunes and get everyone on the dance floor later in the evening, but they also play a crucial role in keeping the whole day running smoothly.

And acting as the Master of Ceremonies is something we’ve done as DJ’s for a very long time. Yes, you can use a Toastmaster if you want something more formal, and even magicians are starting to get in on the act!

The role of the Wedding MC

First of all, let’s talk about what an MC actually does.

They’re basically the host of your wedding, the one who keeps everything flowing and makes sure all the important moments happen on time so that you don’t have to! Think of them as the conductor of the wedding orchestra, making sure everyone is playing their part and hitting all the right notes. Your MC will work with all of your other suppliers including your caterers and your photographer to ensure everything’s happening when and where it’s supposed to be.

So, why is it a good idea to have your DJ double up as your MC?

Well, for one thing, they already have all the equipment they need to make announcements and keep everyone informed. plus they’ll have backups with them should the unthinkable happen and something break (many Toastmasters and magicians don’t by the way!). They’re also able to provide exactly the type of background music you want from their libraries of literally thousands of tracks, and at the correct volume to allow for polite conversation at the tables!

But it’s not just about the technical stuff. A good DJ/MC is also great at reading the room and knowing when to switch things up. Maybe a little humour is required? Maybe it’s time for a little more formality?

And let’s not forget about the all-important speeches. The MC is the one who introduces each speaker and makes sure they have everything they need to deliver their words of wisdom (or hilarious anecdotes, depending on the speaker). They’ll also keep an eye on the time to make sure everything stays on schedule and nobody goes on too long.

So Wayne, I hear you ask...what will you do to MC MY wedding?

First and foremost, I’ll do exactly what YOU want because it’s YOUR special day and each and every wedding is different!

Sounds cheesy I know, but that’s how I work.

But…for the purpose of providing an example….

  • Ensure your guests are at their tables ready for the wedding breakfast
  • Encourage them to stand and cheer as I first introduce the Top Table guests to the room
  • Encourage them to make even more noise as I introduce you as newlyweds to the room (there WILL be napkin waving!
  • Ask your guests to be seated once you’re in place at the top table and to enjoy the meal
  • Provide the background music of your choice for the wedding breakfast
  • Introduce the speeches after first briefly teaching those involved how to use a microphone to it’s best advantage
  • Direct your guests on what to do whilst your room is “turned around” ready for your evening reception
  • Introduce the cutting of the cake
  • Introduce the first dance
In effect when I act as your wedding MC I, RUN the day for you so that you don’t have to worry about what’s happening and when!

All of the above is done with a certain element of fun….after all, your wedding should be a joyous occasion shouldn’t it?

What I absolutely WON’T do is do everything in the cheesy American way that so many couples fear….that’s really not my style.

And as well as all of the above, I’m on hand throughout as your liaison between all of your suppliers to ensure things are running the way YOU want them to, I’ll deal with any questions your guests may have and above all, I’ll ensure that your afternoon reception is the success that you deserve!
